Robotic impressions: Bots view Mercedes-Benz online campaign more than humans

Computer bots viewed the latest Mercedes-Benz online advertising campaign more than humans, according to an ad fraud company.

Telemetry found that 57% of 365,000 ad impressions brokered by Rocket Fuel were ‘viewed’ by automated computer programmes over the space of three weeks.

The Financial Times has reported that the ads were placed a fraudulent websites by the ad tech company Rocket Fuel.

Mercedes said that it and its advertising partner, Merkley & Partners, have received a refund from Rocket Fuel following the incident.

Rocket Fuel has responded to the claims in a blog post – rubbishing “sensational headlines” and affirming their “aggressive posture to screen bots”.

“We reject approximately 40% of all ad space daily due to its failure to pass our own bot and brand-safety screens,” said the post.
