From Q’s inventions in James Bond films to the futuristic gadgets imagined in Star Trek, most of us still find the idea of an intelligent digital watch pretty cool. The new Galaxy Gear released by Samsung hopes to take advantage of this interest, but many are doubtful of its impact on the industry at large.
The Korean manufacturer is looking to capitalise on the rising popularity of wearable technology, following in the footsteps of Google Glass.
With a 1.63-inch bright touchscreen display and stainless steel frame (as well as six different straps to choose from, you lucky things), the watch allows users to send and receive calls and texts, as well as set alarms, check the weather and carry out other actions via a voice-controlled app.
The watch’s potential to act as a marketing tool or advertising channel may however be slightly limited (it is less than 2 inches small, after all).
Only those already in possession of a Samsung smartphone will be able to use the device, as it must be linked to an appropriate mobile phone network. Although this may come as a blow for all the Apple-loving techies out there, don’t despair; the rival tech giant is reportedly working on an iWatch of their own, so watch this space.
