Shoppable Video Is Becoming Retail's Newest Revenue Channel

Shoppable Video Is Becoming Retail’s Newest Revenue Channel

Television has always been good at creating desire. Acting on it is another matter. You see the jacket for three seconds, your spouse spots the perfect lamp, and by the time you’ve fumbled for your phone and opened a search app, the moment is gone.

At Shoptalk Fall 2026’s Brand Storytelling Stage, Bo Moon of LG, Stephen Nesle of Bob’s Discount Furniture, and Evan Moore of NBCUniversal showed three distinct ways to close that gap. Each is proving video can carry real revenue without reading as an ad.

The remote is becoming retail’s checkout counter

Moon’s pitch for LG centers on AI scene discovery, technology that recognizes what’s shoppable in any scene on screen and links it to a catalog instantly. “Now you see it. Now you don’t,” is how he described the old experience of TV commerce. WebOS already absorbs 70% of LG TV usage, and 79% of viewers say TV influences their shopping decisions. LG is building identity, payment, and catalog directly into the television, down to letting viewers order dinner from quick-serve restaurants at 5 p.m. or buy licensed jerseys through a partnership with Fanatics. The remote becomes the checkout counter.

Drama sells furniture better than ads do

Nesle’s case study came from an unlikely place: a reality show about couples disagreeing over decor. Till Decor Do Us Part launched last year through Bob’s innovation fund, a protected slice of marketing budget judged on learning as much as performance. Season one pulled 200 million views, a 58% engagement rate against the brand’s usual influencer content, and $9 million in attributed sales traced to a dedicated shop page. Nesle credits the premise itself: “who hasn’t had an argument with their spouse over how to style a room?”

Letting creators lead paid off faster than expected

For season two, Bob’s swapped influencers for creators, betting that an audience already invested in a creator’s point of view would trust their product choices more. The shift carried real discomfort. “It scared the hell out of me to hand over the keys to the brand to creators,” Nesle admitted, since creators bring their own style and their own relationship with an audience Bob’s doesn’t fully control. The early signal justified the risk. Organic reach and engagement are already running 50% ahead of season one at the same point last year.

NBCUniversal learned a similar lesson. Moore’s team once tried building a standalone shopping property and found it hard to grow an audience and an eCommerce business at the same time. Shop What Happens, hosted by Daryn Carp and underwritten by Target, took the opposite approach, extending the existing Watch What Happens audience instead of starting over.

Four trends are converging at once

Moore traced shoppable TV back to 1977, when Time Warner’s Qube launched in Ohio with its own custom remote and dedicated programming, a regional trial that never scaled beyond its original market. He pointed to four shifts now stacking together where earlier attempts had none: TVs with phone-grade computing power, payment methods already stored in digital wallets, social platforms that have normalized shoppable video for younger viewers, and new protocols like Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol giving platforms a standard way to transact against major retailers’ catalogs. NBCUniversal and LG are already live on an interactive version of Below Deck built on that stack.

What this means for senior marketers

Across LG, Bob’s, and NBCUniversal, video is being treated as its own revenue line rather than a media placement. All three measure engagement and sentiment alongside sales to prove it earns that place. The technology finally exists to support that bet, and three very different brands are already spending against it.
