China's Online Population

A semiannual study by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) found there were more than 22.5 million Internet users in China at the end of January 2001.

Nearly 15.5 million Chinese Internet users use dial-up Internet access. Slightly more than 60 percent of Internet users in China access the Net from home, and just under 44 percent log on at an office. The average Internet use is 13.66 hours per week and -mail is the most popular use of the Internet.

E-commerce has yet to catch on in China, only 32 percent of Chinese Internet users had purchased any goods online in year prior to the survey, and less than 9 percent had bought something at an online auction.
